Borovička’s examination of serbica type material found frequent pleurocystidia, despite contradictory statements in the original description as quoted there. The later broad treatment encompasses variable cystidial form and spore size. [borovicka-2008] [borovicka-2011]

The 2011 study found no differences among its serbica-group samples in ITS, LSU and EF1α. It could not obtain DNA from the serbica paratype and used Croatian collection PRM 903176 as a morphological match. That sampling limitation matters when interpreting the merged species concept. Borovička’s examination of serbica type material found frequent pleurocystidia, despite contradictory statements in the original description as quoted there. The later broad treatment encompasses variable cystidial form and spore size.
