The original description gives a cap diameter of (20–)30–45(–60) mm and describes a convex to slightly umbonate cap with a frequently wavy margin and a short-lived, slightly membranous ring. These are selected observations from the protologue. [guzman-2007-mescaleroensis]

The 2013 revision reports spores 9.6–11.2(12.0) × (5.6)6.4–7.2 µm and sparse pleurocystidia. The original description explicitly reports pleurocystidia absent and describes subrhomboid or subovoid spores, whereas the revision describes ellipsoid, elongate and fusiform spores.
